Dog Walking and Poo Scooping

I love my dog but I hate picking up the dog poo.  When it’s warm outside I’ll take my dog (his name is Fritz) for a walk, let him get some air and do his duty.  I used to think that he Fritz was mocking me because he would choose the most peculiar places to relieve himself.

Here at Abberly at West Ashley we keep our community clean so out of respect and just down right good manners I pick up the poo.  If only dogs had a litter box like kitty cat’s or they could clean up their own poo.  Now that would be great, a dog with good manners, could you imagine?

Bring a Bag With You
Make sure that the bag you use is big enough for the poo.  You don’t want to get poo poo on you.  You know as well as I do that just because you dog is small doesn’t mean that the poo is.

• Like a glove pull the plastic bag over one hand.
• Pick up the poop with your bagged hand.
• With your other hand, grasp the open end of the bag and pull it inside out.
• Knot the bag and put it in the nearest trash can.

While driving in my car the other day, I heard a radio commercial for a really popular home builder in this area.  As someone who has rented an apartment, owned a home, and had a father who constantly taught fiscal responsibility, I tend to see the flip side of any type of new and exciting financial obligation (such as buying a home or car).  This particular commercial touted that you could own a home for just as much as you pay in rent.  This is almost always a misleading statement and I really can’t believe that builders and sometimes Realtors can tell people this with a straight face.

• First of all, the monthly mortgage that they typically advertise does not include property taxes and insurance.
• Secondly, it does not include HOA fees which can be anywhere between $50 per month to $300 per month, depending on the neighborhood.
• Thirdly, and most importantly, the advertised monthly price does not include the yearly maintenance (usually 1% of the home value per year) and decorating costs.

Obviously, you don’t have any of those costs when you are renting an apartment home at our community.   I know that many of you have owned a home and understand the financial responsibility of home ownership.  For those who haven’t, keep this information in mind when listening to one of those commercials!

Whether it’s dog waste, cat waste or whatever, accidents happen; here  are some ways to clean them up.

If the accident is not on carpet you are in luck, just use paper towels and a wipe to pick up the problem.

If your pet goes on the carpet… It can be slightly trickier to clean up. First, pick up as much as you can with a paper or cloth towel. Then spray the area, I like the Woolite rug stick for this myself. Lastly, put down carpet refresher and vacuum the area.

If your pet goes on your clothes… Take them off, wash them immediately and be sure you use a good pre-wash. You may want to wash twice or let the item soak. If your pet goes on something you can not wash in the machine, like your suitcase, If you can catch the accident in time you are fortunate. Use water and thoroughly rinse the spot out. The unfortunate aspect of this is if the stain sits to long the best thing to do may be to just throw this away.

You should also figure out their motives… Did you leave them in the apartment for too long? Move their litter box? Focus and give more attention to your pet when you notice that they are ready to release.

Here are some more methods for home training your pet. Remember, if you don’t catch them doing it, then don’t punish them for it. It would be great if we could teach our pets Do-It-Yourself (DIY) clean up tricks, right?

Living in an apartment by myself, I sometimes feel like I need a companion. A lot of my friends suggested getting a pet, but many apartments don’t allow them. In this day and age, that’s a deal breaker for renters, so most communities now accept pets. My only thing is….what kind of pet should I get and which kinds are acceptable for apartment living?
I know I only have a few options such as a cat, a small dog, a puppy (which I would have to find somewhere for it to go once it grows), or a FISH!!
I came across this article of the “Top 50 Most Popular Apartment Dogs”, and I love half of them!
After much consideration, I have decided that I want a Yorkshire Terrier. A companion by nature, this dog would be perfect for me (not to mention that they are so teeny and cute). So a Yorkie it was—until I saw the price tag!
